Recalled eggs now tied to 98 Salmonella illnesses across 17 states

The FDA and CDC's July 24 outbreak update confirms Midwest Poultry's recalled eggs (Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire's, Sunups; plant code P-1950 or 840962; sell-by July 20 through August 17) as a likely source after 98 people fell ill and 26 were hospitalized. Plus Ford recalls 565,691 Broncos over an engine fire risk, and the cyclospora outbreak window quietly shifts six weeks.

The eggs recall that led yesterday's issue carried a reassuring line: "0 illnesses as of July 22." That line is now obsolete. On July 24 the FDA and CDC posted their first outbreak update, and the same 1,589,577 dozen eggs from Midwest Poultry Services are now a confirmed likely source of a multistate Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak.

The CDC's update counts 98 illnesses across 17 states as of July 24, with 26 hospitalizations (36% of the 72 people whose status is known) and no deaths. Cases stretch coast to coast: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia. That is far wider than the six states where distribution was confirmed, a gap the FDA flags plainly: the eggs "could have been distributed further, reaching additional states."

Two details make this more than a routine count update. First, 40 of the 44 patients interviewed (91%) reported eating shell eggs before getting sick, and the firm's own third-party lab matched the Salmonella in its Texas farm samples to the outbreak strain by whole genome sequencing. That is the lab-to-illness link that was missing Wednesday. Second, the CDC reports the strain is nonsusceptible to ciprofloxacin and resistant to nalidixic acid, meaning some infections may not respond to the antibiotics doctors reach for first. Most people recover without drugs, but the resistance narrows the toolkit for the severe cases.

One honest caveat the agencies are careful about: illnesses began as far back as November 21, 2025, while the recalled eggs were produced only between June 6 and July 3, 2026. Midwest Poultry's eggs are "a likely source for some cases," the FDA says, but "does not account for all the illnesses," and investigators are still hunting other sources. So the recall is the actionable piece for your kitchen, not the whole story of the outbreak.

What to do. Check cartons for plant code P-1950 or 840962 with a Julian date of 157 through 184 (sell-by or best-by July 20 to August 17, 2026). Brands include Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire's, Country Morning, and Sunups, plus bulk Grade A and Grade AA cases sold to restaurants and cafeterias. Do not eat them. Throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, and disinfect any surface the eggs touched. Midwest Poultry's recall line is 574-405-9531. Symptoms (diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps) usually start 6 hours to 6 days after exposure and last 4 to 7 days.

Ford recalls 565,691 Broncos over an engine fire risk

The newest vehicle recall on NHTSA's list covers the entire modern Bronco, and it is a big one. Ford is recalling 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs from the 2021 through 2026 model years (campaign 26V468, Ford number 26S55) because the engine compartment wiring harness lacks enough abrasion protection. Over time, movement between the harness and surrounding components wears through the insulation, exposes bare wire, and can short to ground, arcing into a fire.

Ford's own Critical Concern Review Group logged 15 underhood fire incidents it links to the defect between October 2024 and June 2026, seven in the sporty Bronco Raptor and eight in base Broncos, after inspecting more than 80 vehicles. The Raptor's aggressive suspension and tighter engine bay make it somewhat more prone to the chafing, but standard Broncos can reach the same failure. The automaker is not aware of any crashes or injuries, and it estimates only about 1% of the recalled population, roughly 5,657 trucks, will actually develop the fault. The fix is free: dealers add convolute sheathing and abrasion tape over the harness.

The warning signs are specific and worth memorizing if you own one: smoke coming through the cabin air vents, or a warning message on the instrument cluster, can precede flames from the passenger side of the engine bay. If either shows up, get the truck away from structures. Vehicle identification numbers are searchable now at NHTSA.gov/recalls, dealers were notified July 23, and owner letters start mailing August 24. Do not wait for the letter. Cyclospora / Taylor Farms. The FDA and CDC quietly rewrote the outbreak's boundaries. Both agencies now date the illnesses June 22 through July 20, dropping the old May 13 to July 13 window, which moves roughly six weeks of earlier cases outside the official definition. The FDA also says Taylor Farms' own customer records show recalled lettuce was sold to consumers in Mexico, disclosed the day after Mexico's health ministry announced its samples from the Guanajuato plant were negative. The combined confirmed count across at least two separate Cyclospora outbreaks is approaching 7,000, Michigan stands at 7,664 cases and 160 hospitalizations as of July 23, and the Taylor Farms recall still holds on epidemiology and traceback after the July 18 lab positive was retracted as a false positive. Practical advice is unchanged: do not eat Walmart Marketside Iceberg Salad or Shredded Lettuce with Best if Used By dates of July 18 through August 3, sold in 15 states, and call Walmart at 1-800-925-6278 or Taylor Farms at 855-455-0098. Clover Hill cheese listeria. Unchanged at 12 illnesses, 10 hospitalizations, and 1 death in Maryland across IL, MD, NY, and VA. La Ceiba requeson (La Colonia / Selectos Latinos) is now 15 days past its July 10 expiration, so throw it out if any lingers, and watch for repacks sold as Kesso, Quesos La Ricura, Izalco, De Mi Pueblo, or Rio Lindo. California Dairies powdered milk Salmonella. Still in its fourth month, zero illnesses, and the April 20 recall of 2.7 million pounds of nonfat dry milk keeps rippling through downstream brands (Zapp's and Dirty chips, Ghirardelli mixes, Motor City Pizza 5 Cheese Bread).

Two FDA drug recalls landed Friday, both hospital- or clinic-administered rather than something you take at home. Sunny Pharmtech recalled three lots of Cyclophosphamide for Injection (an injectable chemotherapy, sold under the Long Grove Pharmaceuticals label) after steel particulate matter was found in the vials, with lots C23019V1, C24015V1, and V24010V1. Baxter separately recalled one lot (LD175708) of Cefazolin in Dextrose Injection after cardboard particulate was found in the solution. Neither has reported injuries. If you or a family member receive infused chemotherapy or antibiotics, these are worth naming to your provider, but the action is at the hospital and pharmacy level, not the medicine cabinet.
