Ukrop's recalls baked spaghetti and chicken cobbler over metal slivers

FSIS announced the recall today: about 22,880 pounds of Ukrop's Homestyle Foods baked spaghetti and chicken cobbler sold across Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia may contain aluminum slivers from baking pans, with BEST BY dates through August 5. Plus Michigan cyclospora ticks to 10,773 as the outbreak's downslope holds, and the tracked outbreaks hold.

The recall most likely to be in your refrigerator right now is a ready-to-eat meal from a Virginia kitchen, and the hazard is the kind you would never see coming. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today that Ukrop's Homestyle Foods of Richmond, VA, is recalling approximately 22,880 pounds of baked spaghetti and chicken cobbler products that may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically metal slivers.

The problem was discovered after the establishment received a consumer complaint regarding a metal piece found in a fully cooked product. According to Richmond NBC affiliate WWBT, a small sliver of aluminum was found during a routine review of a baking pan used to prepare the products, and a similar metal fragment was also found in a chicken cobbler product. The baking pan supplier has been notified and has initiated actions to remove all potentially affected pan lots from distribution.

There have been no confirmed reports of injuries due to consumption of these products.

What is recalled

The FSIS recall covers four meat and poultry products, all produced from July 1 through July 29, 2026, with BEST BY dates from 07/08/26 through 08/05/26:

Ukrop's also separately recalled two bread pudding products (Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce, UPC 72251528044, and the Bread Pudding Kit, UPC 72251591732) under the same metal-contamination concern. Those are FDA-regulated, not FSIS, so they fall outside the 22,880-pound USDA recall but carry the same "do not eat, return for refund" guidance.

These items were shipped to retail locations in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, the Department of Defense, and online sales. WWBT lists the affected retailers as Food Lion (VA, NC), Harris Teeter (Williamsburg, VA), Kroger (VA, WV), Publix (VA), Wegmans (Short Pump, Fredericksburg, and Midlothian, VA), Ukrop's Market Hall, Libbie Market (VA), 25th Street Market (VA), and Military Retail (VA).

What to do

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers. If you have any of these products, do not eat them. Throw them away or return them to the store where you purchased them for a full refund. Cyclospora: Michigan hits 10,773 as the downslope holds

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services updated its outbreak page to 10,773 total cases as of July 30, with 193 hospitalizations and zero deaths. That is up roughly 387 from the 10,386 reported in the previous issue, and the daily increase continues to shrink. New cases peaked at 726 per day on July 13 and have stayed below 500 per day since July 23. State chief medical executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian has said emergency department visits for diarrhea complaints are slowing, an early signal the outbreak may have peaked.

The CDC's national surveillance count remains unchanged at 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases plus more than 11,500 additional suspected cases across 45 states since May 1, with 423 hospitalizations and zero deaths. The separate nine-state Taylor Farms and Taco Bell outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce holds at 1,947 cases, 98 hospitalizations, and zero deaths across Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan.

An NPR report published today traced the investigation grind inside Washtenaw County, Michigan, where more than 900 people have been sickened since mid-June. Public health nurses there are asking patients to pull up restaurant receipts, scroll through grocery store apps, and recall exact brands of bagged salad or types of tacos, because Cyclospora symptoms can take two weeks to appear after eating contaminated food. A Washtenaw nursing supervisor told NPR the federal response felt frustratingly slow, saying restaurants were pulling lettuce off shelves before the CDC ever said what it was.

The Taylor Farms recall of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico remains in effect. Walmart Marketside shredded iceberg and whole iceberg salad products with BEST If Used By dates of July 18 through August 3 are still within the recall window. Do not eat them. Tracking

Eggs, Salmonella: Holds at 98 illnesses, 26 hospitalizations, zero deaths across 17 states (CDC update July 24, unchanged since led July 25). The sell-by window of July 20 through August 17 remains open, so recalled eggs may still be in refrigerators. Midwest Poultry Services recalled 1,589,577 dozen eggs with plant code P-1950, Julian dates 157 through 184, sold under Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire's, Country Morning, and Sunups brands. Nara infant formula, botulism: Holds at 4 hospitalized infants in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington, with no new cases since June 13. Nara's July 24 update said FDA found all 27 unopened cans from three implicated lots tested negative for botulinum toxin, while one opened can from a sick infant's home tested positive. The June 13 recall of all lots sold at Target and Nara.com remains in effect.

Clover Hill cheese, Listeria: Ongoing at 12 illnesses, 10 hospitalizations, 1 death in Maryland, unchanged since late June. The La Ceiba requeson sold at La Colonia and Selectos Latinos stores expired July 10, now 22 days past. Throw it out. Repackaged brands Kesso, Quesos la Ricura, Izalco, De mi Pueblo, and Rio Lindo are also affected. The Maryland processor's license has been suspended.

California Dairies, Salmonella: Ongoing in its fourth month. The April 20 recall covers 2.7 million pounds of nonfat dry milk with 40-plus downstream products including Zapp's, Dirty, Ghirardelli, and Motor City Pizza Co. Five Cheese Bread. Zero illnesses reported.

Kia Telluride, fire: Ongoing. 462,869 model year 2020 through 2024 Tellurides, recall 26V430. Park outside and away from structures until the electronic fuse assembly is installed. VINs are searchable on NHTSA.gov. Owner letters are expected August 13. Contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542, reference SC374. This recall replaces the earlier 24V407.

Ford, multiple recalls: Three active Ford recalls this month. Bronco engine-bay fire (26V468, led July 25, 565,691 units, 2021 through 2026 Bronco). Second-row easy-entry seat move (26V451, covered July 21, 387,911 units, parts not available until January 2027).
